A World Cup with 40 teams would increase the number of games by 32, from 64 to 96. That's excessive. I wouldn't even want that with seven additional teams from Europe and one from South America.

Agreed. At a certain point qualifying will be meaningless and just have everyone at the World Cup.

I do question as the number of countries grow the possible candidate nations shrinks to accomodate demands. Of course, I say this with Qatar 2022 on the horizon so who knows.
