He didn't bother me, IIRC I knocked him out like any other miner in Old Camp (and maybe in New Camp too and many in Swamp Camp too, I don't remember) for additional XP, 
before finding the quickest by far, but very late in the game, grinding method in Gothic I, the demon respawning place in the underground area that includes the Temple of the Sleeper.
