It seems to be the same, from what I can tell so far. You select difficulty options at the beginning of the game, before you select either path, and it still gives the same text as Awakening (Normal - for beginners, Hard-for experienced fans...).
If you found Awakening easy, I'd recommend starting on Hard. Conquest is a supposed to be more challenging, so I can't entirely speak to that yet, but I bet you can still handle it if you play other SRPGs. Birthright I'd start on Hard for sure.
