So I got the game from Redbox this morning. Kind of surprised to see it was so widely available in many kiosks around my area, I was expecting to hit "search near me" and it would either pop one up 25 miles away or come back with nothing. And even on Gamefly, it's available to rent right now if I wanted to add it. I wonder how the sales are going to look for this game?
Anyways I played for a few hours. Only as Zangief. None of the other characters I have enjoyed using were included day one, and didn't wanna default to Ken or Ryu. Game is a blast. Seems to be balanced well, decent graphics, nice sound. Controls are ok.
I can see the negative reviews though and where they are coming from. This game is BARE BONES. The big new mechanic to SFV is the V-Gauge and the game does absolutely nothing to explain it. What's worse is its different for every character with different rewards and the game doesn't explain that, either. You pretty much have to hunt down YouTube videos explaining the core mechanics of the game, because the intro tutorial bypasses say.. what Zangief's V ability does, and instead explains how to.. throw, or jump, or move. Yikes.
Netcode is hit or miss. Some matches ran fine, I would most had issues. One was borderline unplayable, even though I made sure to search for only matches with a good connection. It's incredibly difficult to add some friends, but very easy to add others. I guess because of the game combining of PC and PS4 communities, instead of just using your PSN ID you have to make a Capcom ID or something. No MP lobbies at all, which is a sham. Also it seems if you lose your connection to the server you don't earn any rewards for playing, so I guess Puggsly's theory that the game requires an online connection for progress is legit.
I'll probably dick around some more with Zangief tonight and return it tomorrow on the way to work. Gameplay seems good, but the offering is worth nowhere near $60, and I can't support the shenanigans and F2P bullsh Capcom is trying to incorporate here. By the time the complete game is available I am sure the PC version will be dirt cheap. I'll put this $60 towards FC Primal maybe.
