I'd actually agree with cnet on this one, techincally it was the best:
1) Hard-drive: became standard on HD consoles since
2) Online: Forced the competition to provide competent online gaming services
3) Easy to Mod: Where as PS2 only provided the means for pirates to play pirated games and PAL regions to get games earlier, xbox provided a multimedia experience (and of course the same thing the PS2 did in terms of pirates)
4) Triggers on controller: yes the first controller was a spaceship, but it did pave the way to the best controller this generation: the 360's. Changed the way we played shooters and driving games.
And by the way, sales = most successful but doesn't mean it's the best or else the PS3 would be the worst console of this generation (even though it's subjective which console is the best).
For me, the games is what matters and that's why I have a PS2.
