I see why you're thinking that, but this is where I'm going to hit you with some knowledge.

Cloud is the only one that can defeat Sephiroth. Sephiroth himself said this in Dissidia. He wants to give Cloud dispair, more than death. If you look at Advent Children, just when Cloud is about to lose it all, he gets spiritual support from Aerith and Zack, and won. C'mon you can't beat that.

So basically, really Cloud cannot beat Sephiroth. Only when Sephiroth throws the fight did he stand a chance. 

In that case, Shulk even more FTW.
