People play console for games, and the console with the better Exclusives wins, the Wii, had Motion Control Exclusives, that were much popular, and was what sold a lot of Wii, so Exclusives is what sell consoles.

The porn things was just an example of what people can and do use the console for. Playstation is also the most popular platform for streaming Nexflix and people credit PS3 for the success of Bluray movies. Like I said before, Playstation and Xbox became media boxes because that's what the market wants.

PS1 was successful is because Sony did a great job getting developers to put games on their machine. They would also money hat titles on occasion. Sega and Nintendo on the otherhand had a tendency to push developers away with their tech and policies. I think Sony shook up an industry that was arguably being held down Sega and Nintendo. I feel MS did the same when Sony became too relaxed with and released PS3, that machine was a mess.

Hype sold the Wii and notable exclusives helped. Wii U failed in spite of strong exclusives.

I Don't think so, the Hype, did not sold the Wii, was the Motion Control exclusive, that was a New tech on the era, and the Wii sports knew how to make good use of the Wii Mote, people that actually don't had taste for gaming, and also people that already were gamers, purchased the Wii.

Also, i don't think that Microsoft, did anything near Sony, did with Playstation 1, they only released a Cheaper console, with 70% Failure rate, and had a Bost in sales because of Kinect, that they  like Sony, tried to take from the Wii's Sucess.

 

Xbox 360, sold more than Half, just on USA, not even a single Playstation console, sold nearly half the Total only on USA, while on Microsoft's side, all their consoles sold more than Half just on USA, Sony, and Nintendo (Nintendo, when is Using, only sell well on USA, and Japan), have more Worldwide appeal,

but Sony, have much more appeal than Both, on Pal Regions, and on those regions is that the most Growth margin is, Sony, also sell much well on Europe, and Japan.
