Perhaps you missed the part where I mentioned kids. Fireplace + kids = stress!
We got rid of our old wood burning stove a long time ago after the CO alarm went off. Bit of brain damage with the romance :)
Now we've got one of those gas things with a noisy fan to spread the love.
Yet it might work, wait until the kids are asleep, drag mattress in front of fireplace, heat up the room, turn off evil fan, add some candles and music.
