Didn't want to bring that up as a way for him to go off tangent, but yeah, outside of casual non gamer stuff, the types of games that do well on Nintendo systems hasn't changed with Wii U (for better or for worse), just the installbase is way smaller.

The funny thing is that Metroid averages about 1.5 million per entry which is roughly what Tropical Freeze is on track to sell. People who think Metroid on Wii U would have done much better are pretty delusional.

I personally consider something a niche series when any entry in its series can only manage to sell around half a million at best and is something that's a prime 'digital only' candidate.  Franchises like Fatal Frame and a typical game developed by Nippon Ichi, Vanillaware or Atlus are what I consider niche.

In a sense though, I guess you can call Metroid (the Metorid Prime series specifically) niche since it's probably the only significant 1st party, Nintendo owned franchise that specifically targets the 13-21 year-old western male demographic and doesn't click with any of the audiences Nintendo has targeted since the 7th gen (Japanese people, kids, families and casuals).  If Metroid were a Microsoft or Sony franchise, I doubt it would meet your critera of niche because it would be right up the typical xbox/playstation owner's alley.  Also, if Nintendo diversifies their target demographics for the NX, I can see 3D Metroid making a comeback as a 2+ million seller.  But if NIntendo doubles down on the kids and casuals then I don't expect Metroid to do that well unless the NX is priced cheaply enough to be used as a secondary console.
