I remember playing the first one for about an hour or two but it feeling mega grindy without much story :O thinking about trying it and then Borderlands 2 again (I own both) but I am just concerned if it truly is a shooting level grind with constant loot grinding for the whole game :O

Borderlands doesn't have a lot in the way of story. The General Knox DLC (which is really good) probably has a better "story" than the main game itself. However, they listened to the fans and Borderlands 2 has a lot more of a story, including a few great twists and one of the best videogame villains ever.
That being said, though, neither game might be for you if you don't like continually improving your selection of weapons and finding pieces that fit your playstyle and build. It's a game based on perpetual upgrading.
