My favorite campy-but-epic sci-fi movies of each decade:

1960s: Barbarella
1970s: Logan's Run
1980s: Flash Gordon
1990s: The Fifth Element
2000s: X-Men: The Last Stand

(The 1980s is the only decade I had to think about. My definition of epic seems to lean towards saving the planet or civilization or the universe, so I couldn't count Back to the Future 2 or Brazil, but they get honorable mentions. And if you don't think the X-Men movie was campy, watch it again. He says "I'm the Juggernaut, bitch." And it's epic as balls.)

- Barbarella, well o.k. It's over-rated but only in the delicious sense.

- Logan's Run, a beautiful melange of high and low camp mixed into a sci-fi mystery story.

- Flash Gordon, low camp, the "so bad it's good" type. Too bad Blade Runner shit all over it with a bleeding edge and whack-a-mole high camp that actually worked.

- Fifth Element? Jeez, if you're going to reach that far then the best candidate would be Fight Club. Put down the pipe!

- X-Men, hum, well, it's always some kinda campy when guys dress up in tights. I think camp is actually less appreciatied now as the gay culture is mainstreaming.

My favorite serious business sci-fi movies of each decade:

1960s: 2001: A Space Oddysey
1970s: Solyaris
1980s: Dune
1990s: Twelve Monkeys
2000s: Children of Men

(Frank Herbert, the author of the original 6 Dune novels was also the script consultant on Flash Gordon!)

2001: A Space Oddysey - WE HAVE A WINNER!

Solaris - Dude, what? I watched the original in Russian in 1975. It sucked. Clearly you're still upset about that little incident between you and Anthony Burgess.

DUNE - Apparently you forgot to see Aliens, Empire Strikes Back or The Terminator. I'll loan you my DVD's.

Twelve Monkey's - FUCK YEAH!

2000 - Not ready to close out the century yet but CoM is in the running.

My favorite 5 musicals of all time:

1. Happiness of the Katakuris
2. Forbidden Zone
3. Little Shop of Horrors (1986)
4. Labyrinth
5. Hair

This list fails. Singing in the Rain, The Wizard of Oz, Top Hat and Westside Story all say hello. The only interesting one you mention (probably because of all sex, drugs and rock n' roll) is Hair.

My favorite 5 too-arty-for-your-mom movies of all time:

1. Week-End - by Godard
2. Takeshis' - by Kitano
3. Eraserhead - by Lynch
4. Un Chien Andalou - by Bunuel
5. 8 1/2 - by Fellini

Mentioning a foreign film for this category reeks of laziness. Eraserhead is the true winner of this category. My Own Private Idaho or Drugstore Cowboy should get some mention. Then there's all those Michael Moore movies.
