Imagine the Remake and that entire scene. Something tells me it won't be the same (or if it's in it at all, infinitely more hilariously funny).
On subject:
Yes they are a pointless waste of time. What was once in game extras and ended up as unlockables is now just trophies and you get nothing but your own self satisfaction that you did it. Some are completely new things to do, sure but some are added purely to make people do more in the game instead of making them want to play the game fully to begin with. I mean leveling all 6 classes in Diablo to 70? That's just time consuming because reasons.
