My favorite posts are from users saying it would be lucky to sell even a million copies...
But you can't blame anyone for being skeptical of Splatoon's success...
Just think of how long Nintendo was skeptical of new IP's in general...

I wouldn't even really say they were skeptical of new IPs really, as they have fairly consistently made them over the years.

2000-2005: WarioWare, Eternal Darkness, Golden Sun, Advance Wars, Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin, Chibi-Robo, Baten Kaitos, Animal Crossing, etc.

2006-2010: Wii Series, Pandora's Tower, Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story, Endless Ocean, Rhythm Heaven, Elite Beat Agents, Art Academy, etc.

2011-2015: The Wonderful 101, Steel Diver, Nintendo Land, Splatoon, Genei Ibun Roku #FE (sorta), Codename STEAM, Bravely Default, Captain Toad, Pushmo, BoxBoy!, etc.

Typically, we see Nintendo release 2-3 new IPs per year. I think what we've seen with Splatoon, however, is that they really took a chance with the way they handled its advertising. Unlike most of their new IPs, they actually gave it a substantial push. Hopefully its success clues them into how vital marketing is for a game.
