Exactly this. Like I said, this adds more variety and diversity, especially when trying to sneak past hard enemies or simply to avoid repetitive combat.

 

But what if you cant avoid the combat ;O!

What if its a situation like in Beyond Good and Evil - where if you dont use stealth techniques - the game resets your position back if you get caught by one of those laser thingies ;O!?

Nah, I don't think they'll make it mandatory. Well, they could in some specific part of the story, but I doubt it's going to happen too often. I think it's more of an extra to avoid combat and invade bases, like Twintail said above.
