Personally, I don't have a problem with the Xbox One.  If Playstation did not exist, I'd go the PC + Xbox route.  On the other hand, I don't trust Microsoft as a whole and would rather not see them with the market lead.  They didn't change the first Xbox One concept because people didn't like it, they changed because they were going to get crushed in the market-place.  Had there been no PS4, we would have had to live with the Xbox One's first design.  Not that I'd trust Sony without competition, either, though, and I definitely do not want Nintendo to be my only option.

On my job, decisions are made by several people on a corporate level.  Sometimes, things go wrong and SOMEBODY has to be held accountable.  They tend to sacrifice somebody to appease the public. They can say "We identified the problem, the person responsible, and its been taken care of."

I kinda feel like that's what happened at M$. They fired one guy for decisions that probably had input from dozens and dozens of people.

This is the truth.  The original plan for the Xbox One was a corporate decision.  It was a big move that had to get support, and perhaps was even initialized, from the highest levels.  Mattrick did not do that on his own.  It might not have even been his idea.  Spencer was there, too, and we'll probably never know his exact level of input.  Likewise, the new direction was also a corporate decision, even if Spencer is at the forefront.  Honestly, I think it's inspired PR on Microsoft's part to make the new Xbox chief the figure-head for the change and to give him all credit, even if people higher up made the call.
