I'm paying AU$1.08 a litre for regular unleaded on the wife's car. Premium for mine is like $1.30. How come fuel is so expensive in the UK? Taxes?

Yup, basically most of the cost is tax.

The UK duty rate for the road fuels unleaded petrol, diesel, biodiesel and bioethanol is £0.57 per litre, Value Added Tax at 20% is also charged on the price of the fuel and on the duty.
