I'm not sure if it was Skylanders or Nintendo that came up with the toys to life idea first, but yeah; it is arguably the most clever way of packaging DLC/microtransactions, at least the way it works in Disney Infinity seeing as how that's the only series I've experienced.

$15 for DLC generally won't happen more than once or twice on a game that I'm really enjoying, but when that same DLC is a nicely sculpted figurine with an NFC chip in it, it's easy to keep picking up ones that you like.

The main difference between Disney Infinity and Skyladers, is that in Skylanders you can play the whole game with any Skylader and from past games too. In Infinity, you can only play the characters that the levels were made for, unless you play in Toybox. Due to this, I have been leaning towards Skylanders now as my main Toys to Life game. It's also the reason I want to keep buyinig more.

I was a little disappointed the way that cross compatibility works, or rather I should say doesn't work with Infinity .

The Star Wars figures work in the other Star Wars playsets once unlocked, but that should be a given since they were all released for the same Ver. 3.0 and there are less than 20 total.

I didn't run into hitches until after picking up older Ver. 2.0 figures and a play set. Ultron is a 3.0 character that works with 2.0 sets, but the 2.0 sets require Ver. 2.0 Toy Box to work. Not really worth buying a downgrade license for backwards compatibility.

The whole notion of ridiculous franchise breaking cross play (ie. Marvel Heroes in Star Wars and vice versa) does not work within the franchise themed playsets although you can play in Toy Box designed franchise theme levels. It was a little weird flying around as Ironman shooting at TIE fighters but probably not as weird as it would be playing the story of Star Wars as Thor.

So Infinity does limit the fun with franchise based licensed characters a bit, but it's ocurred to me that Infinity is more of a game builder tool set along the lines of Little Big Planet, which is good for designers, but I would like to see the Toy Box itself to be more like Minecraft with customization and content based upgrades.
