I just don't get it... The console gets several good Japanese games and the country still avoids it like the plague.

It's because the Japanese games are rare and they don't have a big name behind them. It would be like a console in America having only what Americans consider obscure games with an occasional FPS title that can't exactly stand up to Halo or CoD.

In Japan, names don't get much bigger than Sakaguchi.
