Afaik they did exceptionally well on Vita actually. The first two games sold a combined 200k in the west as of the end of April 2015, which is extraordinarily good for what is a rather niche genre.

I think this is more like it's an easy port and basically free money for Spike Chunsoft, not the Vita version selling badly

Well, I didn't say the Vita version sold badly. o: I just mean perhaps it didn't do as well as they had hoped, so they ported it to the PC for more profit.

It's more about the publishers seeing PC as a lucrative business. Vita sales were fine. Why would they have made a spin off and have D3 coming if they didn't do well on vita?

Well, there is to consider there will also be a PS4 version of the game, so along with port them to PC perhaps keeping it on Vita alone is no longer viable for them. o:
