my conclusion could be wrong though since i haven't really done much research on this and its a pretty complex issue

I see... perhaps it have more to do with the % of convicted cases versus crimes comitted instead of the severity of the punishment.

What use have capital punishment if you catch 0,1% of the criminals that will suffer it against a 5 years reclusion with 95% punishment rate?
