If things get too hard, the Lecture Hall is a fantastic place to farm blood echoes.
The game can be genuinely scary, which compounds its brutal difficulty. Playing music from Spotify or some other source may help you immensely.
Once you get to the second half of the game, the bosses (save for two) get noticeably easier, even though the areas get much harder and more intimidating.
Ludwig from the DLC is actually possible to beat.
