Can't expect the 'ultimate' in technology to last more than a year or two. Just ask high end PC users.

I don't even really expect the "ultimate" in technology to last one year. Ask any owner of an electronic device ever. Even if the tech isn't out, people are very aware what they have isn't the greatest tech out even if they buy what is supposedly the best when its brand new.

If people want to experience 4k, and they don't plan on purchasing another tv for a while (and being the op states his "old panny" is going out on him, I don't think it's a case of getting a tv every 2-3 years) then they should go for a 4k.

Agreed, but only if they are informed that for most/all of this console generation, 4k will have no place in console gaming. I personally would just get an awesome 1080P TV(saving money at the same time by not going 4k) and enjoying it for the console generation and then see where TV's are at in 4-5 years.  4K content will increase in the next few years but the actual PS4/Xbox1 games won't be 4k.

Just want to add that OLED 1080P TV's would be the best format for this console generation but super expensive and not many companies are making them at the moment.

Agreed. 4k will in no way shape or form be 4k this gen. Other media will be in abundance by this gen's end though.
