Little Big Planet appeal is the level creator, and level creation is something that depends on the users, so it's hard to keep impressing and hyping people with new versions of this kind of games, as they are molded from players themselves as the core experience.

Little Big Planet 3 is the best, but it's also more of the same, some new stuff, but still a level creator game just like the first was, if you have 1 or 2, there is not actually a huge need to want another.

 

Pretty much this. Maybe if they did a better marketing for LBP3 it would've succeed a bit more, plus the fact it also came to PS3 and holded the PS4 version could've influenced.  I'd also like to note that LBP3 was a buggy mess at launch but was patched much, much later. These little things do matter.
