There is a very odd (underlying) thought process that Sony fans have when they talk of the long PS3 lifespan ... They believe the Wii should not be successful today because of how obsolete it is, and yet (in a couple of years) when the PS3 is in a similar position to the Wii they believe that it will become more successful.
