Undertale is a NES era type game? I don't get it. How is it game of the year for many of you?

Good story, extremely memorable characters, one of the best video game soundtracks ever, unique and fun battle system, lots of personality, incredible soundtrack, good length and replayability. 

 

I liked it more than every big, non-indie game this year except maybe Dark Souls 2 and Splatoon and Mario Maker.
