You may be right. Especially this gen.  With the original Xbox, I have no experience so I can't speak.  With the 360, at least for the first several years, Xbox players spent tons of money on diverse software libraries.  With the Xbox One, people don't seem to want to support anything but a few select franchises.  The attach rate seems to be way down.  That's how it feels, at least.

Well, that's partly because a lot of playstation 2 owners went with xbox360 since it was the first to release and pretty much outperformed ps3 in every way. If you recall, it wasn't like xbox OG sold a lot of diverse software. It was mainly their core franchises that did really well. Because of the entry cost of ps3 and the functional differences, a whole group of different gamers went to xbox, which expanded their demographic taste. This was further reinforced by the wave of people "jumping in" when kinect released.

But now, that situation is again reversed, and the migrants have returned to playstation.

THIS.

The VideoGame panorama returned to normal this generation. Playstation on top and the competition battling for a second place. Last gen was a weird situation since the beginning and 7th gen is not a fan favorite as a whole among the people.

If you make a poll asking about the best games in each gen, people will divide between the 5th and the 6th gen. What do they have in common? A Playstation console ruling the market.

People will say that it is bullshit but when a Playstation console is on top, the market is healthier and the games are just better and more diverse.

Look at the resurgence of the JRPG genre thanks to the Ps4, and this is just one example.
