That is the importance of a director. If you have different people working on their own, with their own idea of how the project should go, chances are the end result will be a cluster-fuck that doesn't fit in together. Kojima seems to come up with a direction and is very communicative of this idea to the people working behind him. Plus he works the story.
Merceron makes it look like Kojima goes way and beyond what could be the norm in the involvement of a project from someone in his same position.
