Ironic, isn't it, given how everybody was saying that the Wii U had an empty holiday lineup this year.  The lack of a price cut even had me thinking that the Wii U would for sure be down this year.

It just goes to show that once a console has amassed a sufficient back-catalog of amazing games it can start to carry itself to a degree.

It certainly is, although it should never have gotten to that point really.  I can understand the argument for holiday lineup but really, if you look at the top software for this week, it really doesn't matter how close to the holidays you release your games - moreso just that the games that are releasing are appealing software for gift-giving.

So looking through the chart, we've got Youkai Watch (released in July); Splatoon (released in May); SMM (released in September); Animal Crossing (released in July); Rhythm Heaven (released in June) and Minecraft (released in March).  Those are the games propping up the chart among new releases - but none of them released close to the holidays.

Heck, Vita beat PS4 this week, despite one of them having a new game which sold 123k and one of them having a new game that sold 28k.  But Minecraft is doing enough holiday-heavy-lifting for Vita that it could trump the PS4.
