I actually think I'm an example of why they do compete.  I love video games and I can't stand to miss good ones.  That's why I grabbed both.  But both of them compete for my monthly gaming budget, so I see them in very direct competition although I support both of them.

They compete for your dollar, yes. But that's because you bought both of them. A majority of Wii and PS3 owners own only one console.

And it is my guess, that if the Wii never existed, a very large % of it's owners would not own a PS3 or a 360. That's why I say they don't compete directly.

So since I don't own both a Ford and a Chevy, they aren't both competing for my $?  Where are your statistics that Wii owners and PS3 owners only own one console?  My guess is the large majority at least own or did own a PS2 based the PS2 numbers.  I'd also question that if the Wii never existed, if this owners would just dissapear from the console market.  I wouldn't expect the 360 or PS3 to open up 25 million over night, but over the course of their life, I'd see most Wii owners grabbing some console.  The Wii certainly has some owners that would never purchase a PS3 or a 360, but I'm guessing that there are some fanboys that wouldn't buy other brands if their favorite dropped out of the market.  It just gets me back to where I was originally.  Let's say I'm going to make a gaming site to compare console says.  Say I call this place vgchartz.com :).  Your going to tell me that I can't come up with useful Wii to PS3 sales comparisons because 1.  Most people will only buy one console, and 2.  Most Wii owners won't buy a PS3 or 360 at their current prices?
