He's just comparing 2001 to 2008. I believe PS3 releaesed in europe in late 2000. I think.

The problem is however the PS2 was HEAVILY supply constrained during 2001. Therefore comparing the two years are worthless since even if the PS3 matched or even surpased 2001's numbers it could (and does) have much less demand, and therefore will sell much less lifetime.

It's like saying if the Wii matched the PS3 next week due to wii's supply constraints that they both have the same level of demand.  Any comparison of Wii to any other system while it's still supply constrained in some markets is worthless unless it exceeds the other number.
