it won't provide any additional gpu power and it's only connected via HDMI and USB(power), so the data transfer would be waaay to slow to add to graphics processing anyway

Isn't it used to double the frame rate? I thought it was supposed to up the fps to 120, probably by techniques used in tv's nowadays.
Hopefully the specialized box will keep the display lag as low as possible and add final headtracking corrections to the image, so turning your head will have the lowest lag possibe.
