I think the Japanese people have a natural distrust for consoles that are wider than their penis is long. Its probably why the Wii is such a huge hit there.

Well pretty much the DS, Wii and still the PS2 get the most shelf space from what I've seen. The PSP is kind of in the middle, in a hit or miss fashion. Both the PS3 and 360 are generally on the short end of the stick in regards to shelf space.
