Up until (about) the middle of April in 2001 the PS2 was supply limited in North America and Europe, it started averaging over 300,000 units per week leading up to (and following) the release of Gran Turismo 3, and then had a massive christmas because of the release of Grand Theft Auto 3.


 this whole comparison is completely flawed to begin with.  Why are we comparing 2001 to 2008?  PS2 was just released only a half year back in America and Europe in this comparison, and just over a year in Japan.  The PS3 has been released for a year in Europe and a year and a half in Japan and America.  

In other words you are comparing the second half of PS2's first year (in everywhere but Japan) to the 2nd half of PS3's 2nd year.  PS2 was severely supply constrained in this time also. 

Why don't you compare 2002 to 2008?  Well, I think I already know that answer. 

 Of course i don't expect anything better from crazzyman.
