Anyone my age or more should recognise that modern gaming is complete garbage relative to the 90's. The younger generation probably think DLC/Micro transactions are the norm and always have been.

In many ways, yes it is complete garbage compared to the old days.  But in many ways it isn't. If all you do is look at the surface of the mainstream gaming industry, then yeah, it does seem a little soul-less and money-grabbing compared to gaming back in the 80s/90s.  But if you dig into the indie market, you will find plenty of platformers, RPGs, point and click adventures, etc.  And that's where I spend most of my money these days.  I have a subscription to Indie Box as well.

If a game like Axiom Verge was released on the SNES or PSX, it would have been held in a similar regard to Super Metroid or Symphony of the Night.
