What is wrong with amiibo being bought for the figurine? Some of those are really well done, specially the cartoony ones. The money goes to Nintendo's pockets anyway, so what's the problem?

The problem is that people is in denial that Amiibo figurines are DLC.

So are Skylanders and Disney Infinity right? It's not like Nintendo is doing something that hasn't already been established as a form of DLC that some people are happy to pay for. Though I suppose if you are selling Amiibos for games that don't inherently need them, like Splatoon or MK, then you are getting into somewhat more murky territory that Skylanders and Disney Infinity don't occupy.

I don't know why Nintendo thought people wouldn't by them as collectors items, especially when they make some Amiibos super rare. But yeah, while there is short term benefit to people buying as collectors items because it's revenue and profiuts for Nitnendo, the strategic purpose of Amiibos is not that they are an end in themselves but that they are meant to lead to increased softwarre and console hardware sales. If they aren't actually achieving that more important strategic goal then their value to Nintendo is significantly diminished. It will be interesting to see whether they continue with producing something that largely amounts to collectible figures with no broader benefit to the company or whether they ditch Amiibo in the next generation in favour of something that will drive console hardware and software sales.
