Play online with friends. The game is much more fun in Co-op and will be much easier. But on the other hand when I played the game solo, It was pretty easy, as long has you do the side quest and don't go in gun blazing have yourself surround and out-gunned the game won't be hard at all.
Sounds to me like you simply underpowered or too low in level. Go do some side quest. Maybe, your simply playing a character that's too hard on solo. Play as Axton or Salvador if you're playing solo.
