Some of the greatest songs like what? Titanic's theme? I'd argue that ALL of the most important songs, were written by the performer.

Fly Me to the Moon - Bart Howard. Not Frank Sinatra.

Respect - Otis Retting. Not Aretha Franklin.

In the Ghetto - Mac Davis. Not Elvis.

Ain't No Mountain High Enough - Nickolas Ashford & Valerie Simpson. Not Marvin Gaye or Tammi Terrell

Take the 'A' Train - Billy Strayhorn. Not Ella Fitzgerald.

With all due respect, you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about when it comes to music. The most important songs? To who? 80s/90s kids?

Outside of genres like pop, rock, and country, and their branches of more niche connected genres and sub genres like metal or punk, almost no one successful writes and sings their own songs. Especially not "the most important" songs. What you really want to say is "my favorite songs," likely from a select group of your favorite pop/rock singers/bands you hold nostalgia for. I don't know what your scale for "important songs" is, but it is clearly incredebly inaccurate.

Nailed it...anyone who thinks they "know" music should watch "Sound City" and "Sonic Highways" to get a real education. It becomes very apparent that it has always been a songwriter business AND singer business, whether it be Chicago, LA, NY, or Nashville. There are multitudinous songs that have gone multiplatinum, long before many of us were born, written by OTHER mega famous singers. Also, music has been pretty good for a pretty long time.
