Some of the greatest songs like what? Titanic's theme? I'd argue that ALL of the most important songs, were written by the performer.

Fly Me to the Moon - Bart Howard. Not Frank Sinatra.

Respect - Otis Retting. Not Aretha Franklin.

In the Ghetto - Mac Davis. Not Elvis.

Ain't No Mountain High Enough - Nickolas Ashford & Valerie Simpson. Not Marvin Gaye or Tammi Terrell

Take the 'A' Train - Billy Strayhorn. Not Ella Fitzgerald.

With all due respect, you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about when it comes to music. The most important songs? To who? 80s/90s kids?

Outside of genres like pop, rock, and country, and their branches of more niche connected genres and sub genres like metal or punk, almost no one successful writes and sings their own songs. Especially not "the most important" songs. What you really want to say is "my favorite songs," likely from a select group of your favorite pop/rock singers/bands you hold nostalgia for. I don't know what your scale for "important songs" is, but it is clearly incredebly inaccurate.
