The Tri Force of Power is always with Ganon.
The Tri Force of Wisdom always passes down to the female descendents of the original Princess Zelda, who by tradition recieve the name Zelda.
The Tri Force of courage tends to find it's way to the hero of the generation who is has no relation to any previous hero, his name is also whatever you call him, it's not necessarily Link. So he could technically be a she for a game. It's like the Doctor in Doctor Who could regenerate as a female Timelord. But it seems that world is still full of angry men who do not like the possibility of a hero being either male or female.
Frankly, the series does need to mature, and by allowing a gender selection would be a massive step forward. Link was designed to be a character that is a "Link" from the player to the gaming world. Link is supposed to be you, hence why you can give him your name. So it would make sense if you could pick your own desired gender as well.
