It would literally have to be the most expensive game ever made to have not made a profit.

When 400M is counting several HW stuff (consoles, headsets, controllers) and our sales reports don't get even close on SW, I would say that 400M isn't entirely covering SW development cost. So we can't claim how much, if any, Halo have already profited.

But Azzanation was trying to Claim the game made 400M in profit, which is completely wrong.

I know the difference between increased revenue and profits. Halo 5 has sold just under 2m on VGcharts not including Digital. The game has sold well and has most likely made profits on software alone. Include Digital sales and another couple of years and Halo 5 will most likely have sold a very healthy number of games. Its all speculation but like  i said, i would bet my chickens Halo 5 has brought in a very healthy income to MS and 343.

And well deserved too.

Quite possible very good profits, but we can't be sure, since their revenue PR have a lot of non-SW included that we don't know the cost. So it could go from they still on the loss to 30% profit and we wouldn't be able to be certain either way. On the long run with DLC and microtransactios, plus more sales I have no doubt it will reap a lot of profits.
