That's the point though. Shit happens :P Being prepared for this specific crazy scenario is probably pointless, but bad situations do happen. And there are times when you have to choose, who will live and who will die. I think its important to at least consider these things, every now and then.

To make the scenario a bit more likely, say there's a fire on the ship and half the life boats are ruined in the fire.

 

Ultimately, being able to make quick (and good) decisions will save more lives. If you spend most of the time debating who deserves a spot on the boat instead of actually helping people of the sinking ship, you might not be able to use all the life boats in time. What if a massive fight breaks out, and people start killing eachother? What if some people think, "if I'm not getting on, no one will" and sabotages the life boats!

Maybe I'm being silly. I like thought experiments.
