only in a world where there is no competition.
Nintendo's biggest issue with the wiiU was releasing hardware that couldn't really distinguish itself from hardware that was already 8yrs old. They didn't give everyone else a reason to buy it. Everyone else just decided to wait for the new version of what they were already playing. If Nintendo made hardware that could match the PS4 or XB1 in the WiiU, and had garnered a following of 10M by the time those consoles released everything would be very different now. .
this basically applies to jumpstarting a "premature" generation in 2017 by Sony or MS. would there be enough in those consoles to differentiate it from the PS4/Xb1. if there isn't. there the state of cross gen gaming then will be significantly worse than it is now. and we would basically just have the cheaper 30fps consoles by the more expensive 60fps consoles.
