Actually the PS3 GPU was weaker in some ways. Cell was brute force and at the same time a 'dumb' design, from the beginning intended to do some graphics work.
Basically the opposite of what is done today.
Blu Ray is a thing. Going for a PS3 with Blu Ray helped Sony massively winning the HD-format war. It made the PS3 expensive for some time which increased their loss per console. But in the end Sony won against HD-DVD partially due to selling millions of Blu Ray players (aka PS3).
