 That's possible. I bought a launch fatboy core (wifi and consoles are for chumps). 

All PS3s have disc based PS1 backward compatibility. 1st and 2nd gen fat PS3s had like >95% disc based PS2 backward compatibility. All slims can still read PS1 discs though.
