Even at 300 dollars, I would strongly recommend a PS4 or an Xbox One over the Steam Machine I.
I don't see the appeal of the Steam Machine X. If you're spending that much on a PC, you're either an enthusiast, you would be building your own PC. Alternatively, you would need your PC to be a workstation, which a Steam machine is not optimal for.
That said, at that price point, the Steam Machine P is attractive. It won't blow consoles out of the water with those specs, but the performance difference will be very significant. A 970 is a good graphics card.
