The genre is still evolving.
Mirrors Edge (though a first person platformer actually) has had a huge impact in FPS movement. Todays FPS characters can slide, climb, sometimes wallrun and combine movements.
With Halo 3 the Chief couldn't even sprint.
That often goes as well for melee combat. There have been few games before that had more than a single melee attack or melee weapon. One of them was FEAR.
Games have been influencing each other for better or worse from the beginning. Having a CoD'ey campaign in to many FPS probably was for the worse though.
Tha's where many FPS got to indifferent.

But really, it's a genre with pretty high standards and a real revolution being pretty difficult. No one expects that from, let's say 2D platformers anymore.
