First, I was referring to the end of the year situation which is about the same kind of thing.  Small titles of mixed or poor reception plugging gaps.

But to address your post, I would not consider Splatoon, Mario Maker, Yoshi's Wooly World, Fatal Frame V (despite its niche status a mixed reception), and in the case of Japan Genei Ibun Roku #FE to be filler.  Not as good as last year, still a pretty good one.  You seem to have confused the concepts "games I don't like" with the concept "filler." I would untangle those wires post haste.  The implications of each is quite different from the other.

splatoon released in late may (just like mario kart 8), mario maker is solid. but mario maker + yoshi + xenoblade + fatal frame does not match up to bayonetta + hyrule warriors + smash bros. Both smash and bayonetta were candidates for goty. I don't recall small "fill the gap" titles during late 2014.

The filler was in the 2014-2015 transition.  Captain Toad, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, and to an extent Mario Party.  I wasn't arguing 2014 vs 2015 as much as pointing out that filler between major gaps has been done before, including the 2014 - 2015 transition.  And as I just said, you listed Hyrule Warriors which is well before the Holidays, thus I assumed you were discussing the the majority of 2014.  But I'm not saying XBX + Mario Maker + Yoshi + FF = Bayonetta 2 + Smash + Hyrule Warriors.  Reception wise, Mario Maker and Yoshi are close approximates to Bayonetta (or Smash) and Hyrule Warriors, respectively.  It's hard to say where XCX.  Mid 80s to low 90s seems plausible with the western previews going positively but I digress.  It's a close match, but 2014 edges it out by a bit on Smash or Bayo, since MM comes up a touch short of those two in general consensus.  FFV is a nice bonus for diversity though.
