If anything my university experience was libertarian in nature. Professors never seemed to care who you were, just the work you did. I had a professor who made an argument and asked if anyone disagreed. No one objected so he stated "All right then, I now take the opposing view so everyone here should be fine debating it."
The emphasis is thinking critically, having sources, evidence, and logic. We actually had a rule that had to state "think" over "feel" as it was seen as place of ideas.
