The debate over the use of lethal force by police marksmen has re-opened as it emerged that Mark Saunders, the barrister killed during an armed siege, was shot at least five times.

Mr Saunders, 32, was hit in the brain, heart and liver after nine officers opened fire during the stand-off in Chelsea, west London, on Tuesday.

As his parents spoke of their memories of a "caring, considerate and loving son", the Metropolitan Police insisted once again its officers had been left with no choice but to shoot Mr Saunders, who fired indiscriminately at neighbours and policemen over the course of five hours.

At the opening of an inquest into Mr Saunders's death at Westminster Coroner's Court, Lynda Morris, the coroner's officer, confirmed that none of the bullet wounds had been self-inflicted.

I personally can't believe they're even having an inquest: Dude was shooting at people so the police shot him, big deal.
