While it might not be the case for others, PC gaming is also valuable for me because I am a *relatively* poor college student and for me it allows me to reduce costs by combining a few things into one. I need a PC for my school work (which involves intensive visual programs that use GPU resources) so I might as well build a nice one to replace my laptop for a third of the cost, and subsitute any great want for $350 consoles as well (although I will be getting a Wii U on black friday.) Instead of buying a $1,000+ Laptop with a requisite, but probably weaker, discrete GPU and a $350 gaming platform - I can build a $700 PC and get both, which performs better (for me) than both. As for my portable computing needs I have my phone and tablet, which I would've had anyway. So I have fewer sink costs and fewer variable costs for both my needs as a student and my wants as a gamer.
